A sporty, two-door coupe, the Honda Prelude was one of a handful of models that helped the Japanese manufacturer gain a greater foothold in the American and European auto markets during the 1970s and 80s. Long popular amongst street racers in both Japan and the United States, the Prelude was first released in 1978 as a redesigned version of the first-generation Accord, which was engineered to be shorter, more powerful and have a lower profile so as to provide a faster, sportier ride. The first-three generations of the Prelude experienced excellent sales, but these numbers quickly dropped off with the fourth and fifth generations and lead to the model’s eventual discontinuation in 2001.
